The area around Carlsbad CA was populated and popular long before Carlsbad became an incorporated city. Water wells of sublime quality were found in the surrounding areas and the Luiseño people had their population centers around those water sources.
Water carried importance for the area even afterward. A sailor named John Frazier dug a well in the area and started offering the water at the local train station. Soon it became known as Fraziers Station. The town became known as Carlsbad after a sample was taken from the well, and was found to be chemically similar to a popular, well-known European spa water – which was located in the town of Karlsbad.
